Discernment is a Great Place to Start Your Plans for Summer Vacation

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, Philippians 1:9-10 ESV

The end of this school year brings anticipation of summer vacation. Long summer days often present more leisure time with family, friends and meeting new acquaintances that can have lasting effects and memories. So how does one plan, get ready for the best interaction with others and new experiences?

Discernment is a great place to start your summer vacation plans. Discernment is not a physical location it is an ability to grasp and comprehend what is not obvious. Paul’s prayer draws me to a reflection on how powerful discernment would have been for Jacob a young man in the book of Genesis, who was destined for greatness. However, Jacob found himself on a road that kept him in a frustrating, hard, difficult life for at least 20 years. His interaction with family and those he would later chose to be around were critical components leading to his situation.

With Jacob and his associates, we find that desires, character and motives were at the heart of the matter. This not only cost him his family and home, it caused a long difficult and unnecessary delay in reaching his purpose and potential. Some people will try to use your friendship to question your loyalty, to hold you back. Others will entice you with something to make you think they are looking out for you. This is what Laban did to Jacob. Then after going along with them, you will disappointingly find that like Jacob you have wasted time, even years, trying to get what you want and what you thought your life would be like.

The Holy Spirit can help you discern spirit’s like that of Laban; people with evil, selfish motives or deceitful intent. Discernment can help you develop character and motives in line with what God has for you. It will also give you greater accuracy in perceiving the character and motives of other people.

Discernment will help you develop your character by distinguishing Jesus’ voice. An increased reverence for God will lead you from choices and out of the grips of individuals whose hearts do not hold the will of God for your life. Discernment can help lead you on a journey that raises you to a higher level of expectations and achievement. So start your fun filled vacation seeking discernment to choose wisely, honorable relationships, experiences, worship and intimacy with God.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Von Crigler
