Three Steps to Gratitude

“O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.” I Chronicles 16:8 (NRSV)

Three Steps to Gratitude

One of the absolute best aspects of the fall season are the holidays—however November is a time that a gratitude awaking begins that seems to conjure up the spirit of widespread thankfulness in us.

It was that thankful spirit that King David dramatically and unashamedly conveyed to the people of Israel in the text.  He was overwhelmed with thanks to God for allowing him to bring the Ark of the Covenant of God back to Jerusalem.  In other words the king was overwhelmed with gratitude for being afforded an integral role in God’s plan for His people—not King David’s plan but God’s.

And so steps were taken by the king to orchestrate a special day of praise and thanksgiving to God. He mobilized his royal capacity as the leader and made ready for the arrival of the Ark of the Covenant of God to be placed in a tent that the king himself had built.

The first step to gratitude is to be genuinely grateful and happy about what God is doing in your life. As the royal ruler the king infused a thankful consciousness in the people for what God had done for them in spite of them.  The Levites were commissioned to evoke among the people praise and thanksgiving to the LORD.

The second step to gratitude is to envision thanksgiving the way God does and set the stage to Praise God as a lifestyle. Why?  It is because the LORD inhibits the Praise of his people.  Calling on God in distress is one thing, but regularly calling His precious name with a thankful heart of praise is quite another. David not only elicited the praise of the people but he leaped and danced in praise to God in front of God and everybody!

And the third step to gratitude is to tell somebody about the goodness of the LORD—know the gospel and spread the gospel.  Jesus said to his disciples “go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Tell people everywhere about the Life, the Death, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the imminent Return of Jesus Christ our LORD.

O, give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name. Tell men and women, boys and girls of his goodness.

Yours in Christ,
